Farewell, KAMPERS

An official farewell to KAMPERS, our Track-1 project from 2019-2024:

The project, known as KAMPERS (Kentucky Advanced Manufacturing Partnership for Enhanced Robotics and Structures) advanced the state-of-the-art in advanced manufacturing through the integration of synthetic biology, 3D printing, and the emerging field of printed electronics to revolutionize the capabilities of robotic manufacturing infrastructure, medical assistive robots, prosthetics, and consumer products.

The award supported eight new faculty hires, generated over $27M of follow-on research funding, resulted in 151 academic research publications, and added 41 patents to the intellectual property pipeline. KAMPERS had over 1,000 participants and collaborators and involved nine different Kentucky academic institutions.

The award established the Louisville Automation & Robotics Research Institute (LARRI) at the University of Louisville, a multi-disciplinary team of faculty, staff, and students with combined expertise in the emerging research areas related to automation and robotics. The multi-disciplinary approach at LARRI generated solutions for advanced manufacturing applications as well as healthcare and logistics challenges.

At the University of Kentucky (UK), the institution was able to hire three world-class faculty members with expertise in both bioelectronics and quantum information science, allowing UK’s research teams to be the first in Kentucky to publish and successfully pursue funding in these emerging research areas. KAMPERS resulted in the discovery/characterization of new printable materials suitable to embed into structural components of 3D objects.

Thank you to all our researchers, students, administrators, and citizens who helped make KAMPERS a resounding success in the commonwealth. The ripple effect of its innovations will impact Kentucky for years and possibly generations to come.
